[insanejournal.com profile] lunapome once suggested using the various deities from the Faerun campaign setting as a Halloween costume theme. I liked the idea, but didn't think about it again until recently, when I looked through the Faiths and Pantheons gallery. And now ... well, now I've decided to do it and the only question is whether I dress up as Mystra or Shar.

I like both of their costumes, and the lovely and talented [insanejournal.com profile] lunapome is capable of making either one within the next nine months. So, as usual, I'm just feeling indecisive about which one to actually pick.

Pros about Mystra:
-Long black hair, so no wig for me.
-Simpler than Shar, and therefore requires less time and effort from [insanejournal.com profile] lunapome, and less money from me.
-I have knee-high black boots already.
-I have an old, ratty black jacket that is available for alteration.
-I have plenty of blue fabric from this past year's Halloween costume, which could be used for the top and skirt.

Cons about Mystra:
-The torn jacket and pouch thing give me an early-90s comic book vibe. And not in a good way.
However, the image is just a guide, and I could alter the costume to something more attractive.
-I did the flowy skirt/dress thing last year already, and I kind of want to do a different type of outfit.

Pros about Shar:
-Also long black hair. Also, I think the image looks more open to Asian interpretation (straight dark hair, more yellow in the skin tone). Obviously that isn't necessary to use the costume, but it makes me happy.
-The costume is, hands down, cooler looking than Mystra's.
-My knee-high boots could be safely used as the base for Shar's boots.
-There has already been the suggestion of doing an evil deity theme, so Shar would fit in nicely.

Cons about Shar:
-More effort from [insanejournal.com profile] lunapome and more money from me.
However, given the advance notice we have, [insanejournal.com profile] lunapome says she'll be okay, and I would be okay spending the money gradually over several months, rather than all at once.

That's really the only bad point. I already know that I prefer the Shar costume as it stands. However, if I can modify the Mystra costume such that I like it as much or better, it *would* be more efficient ... *sigh*

One costume that I have no question about is that [insanejournal.com profile] ratzeo should be Mask, the god of lies. Because who else should a GM dress up as?

my completely first-impression not-very-thought-out impression: Halloween costumes are not about efficiency. Dress up as the one you think would be cooler/more fun. yup.

You are, indeed, correct. After I plunked down about $100 on last year's Halloween costume without regret, I came to a similar realization.

I'm going to give Mystra's costume a chance, see if I can't make it cooler somehow. But if I don't come up with anything soon, I'm going with Shar.

Oooh! That sounds like fun. I think Shar looks pretty cool, but I suspect that the costume will be complicated to make.

That's my feeling, too. Kindra says it would be a fun challenge, so I think it'd be okay. So unless inspiration strikes on the Mystra costume, I think I'll be picking Shar.

Who's going as Illmater?

No one that I know of yet. None of the male deities have been signed up for.

It might be a rather awkward costume, I think. Here let's break one of your arms and cut you up... It's for verisimilitude. Oh, and here is your bloody loin-cloth.

A little awkward, yeah. XD

If we're going for hardcore accuracy, the image of Lathander has him holding a baby, so ... :P
