Yeah, this. Not to mention that they could make matters worse... like, let's say they beat up someone they saw hitting their partner, but who do they think will the abuser make suffer once they have recovered?
And besides, when someone tells me they'd (for example) kill a rapist it would not make me feel safer around them because what would stick is "If you piss this person off enough they'll kill you". (I'm not sure how to put this feeling into words, I hope you know what I mean?)

I think I get what you're saying - they're putting the emphasis on violent action and retribution, and not on prevention, giving you support, etc. so it's no wonder that what sticks out to you is their willingness to attack/kill someone. Yeah, they'd have a good reason in that case - but what else is a "good enough" reason?
