The one thing that keeps this kind of scenario AU is the fact that Sae's Bluff check, while mediocre, still totally pwns Gunnar's Wisdom. I think he's ready to be assertive, but he just has no way of knowing that Sae is hiding her feelings out of defensiveness.

Then again, he could always figure it out logically (i.e. with Int instead of Wis), based on what he knows about her personality.
