Happy New Year!

I hope everyone's 2007 was good, and that your 2008 is even better.

I will do either the celebrate-at-a-party thing, or the stay-in-and-be-mellow thing for New Year's, depending on my mood. This year, I did the party thing, and it was crazy-fun.

One thing that I discovered, nerd that I am, is that being alcohol-buzzed makes me better at Rock Band. XD Well, I was better at the drums, at least - I didn't do much of the other parts. I think what happens is that alcohol makes me warm and relaxed (I'm sure it would also eventually make me lose motor control, but I don't have the stomach to drink that much), so I didn't tense up and freeze during the intimidating sections of songs. I still didn't get them all right, mind you, but at least I tried and did well most of the time. I got to the point where I was playing in Hard mode and hitting 80-90% (something I hope I can continue to do when I'm totally sober ^^;;).

And when I failed, [insanejournal.com profile] casaval was there to save me by triggering Overdrive by screaming my name into the mike. XD

There was other stuff at the party, but that's pretty much what I spent my time doing. <--geek

On New Year's Day, I had the day off from work, so I got to sleep in and then play [insanejournal.com profile] ratzeo's game (a mini-adventure finishing up our current story arc). Among other things, my character got to engage in a politically/theologically fraught ritual combat, and also perform a ritual to bind itself to Unfettered, one of the Weapons of Legacy from the Book of Nine Swords (and also, coincidentally, quite perfect story-wise and number-wise for my character, so it's very exciting).

I also want to note, for my own record and amusement, that I rolled at least 5 or 6 natural 20s during this adventure (which was pretty light on the d20 rolls anyway, so it wasn't easy). Three of those 20s came on three consecutive turns (not consecutive rolls, because I was making full attacks).

First round: "Nat 20!" (did not confirm, rolled something else on my second attack)
Second round: "Nat 20!!" (did not confirm, rolled something else on my second attack)
Third round: "... nat 20?" (confirmed, did not roll a second attack because I pwned my opponent XD)

I will never roll that well again. XD

Anyway, as for the important New Year's stuff (or at least slightly more serious than D&D) - resolutions. I've been making monthly goals, and I've more or less figured out how to make them specific and rigorous enough to create useful progress, while still being feasible.

I've also found that it helps just to have goals, regardless of the specific content of them. Once I graduated in June and was no longer under constant deadlines, it became easy to waste my time by vegging once I got home from work. Now that I've been making goals, whenever I find myself idle, I can just think about my goals and make sure that I'm doing the things I want to do (this doesn't mean that I don't still veg, but that I don't do it all the time).

I'll be continuing with these goals, rather than doing a set of resolutions for 2008. I don't feel like making goals for my year yet (besides the obvious "be healthy/happy/productive"). And I don't think it's a good idea to set goals without knowing what I really want.

But I guess you could say that my 2008 resolution is to keep up with my goals? I mean, I want to keep figuring out what I would like to achieve, make steps for doing so, and not let myself lose time doing things that I don't really want to do.

I only made one resolution this year, but it encompasses pretty much all the details. I agree with monthly goals. Or weekly, or daily, whatever you need to keep yourself on track :D

Yeah, it seems like a good one. :D

Monthly goals are working best for me, but I do find it helpful to take stock of my progress (even just mentally) at the end of every week.

I make daily to-do lists right now, because I just need that much help. Hee hee.
