it's just fun to dance with people who know better what they're doing

A teacher is just someone who knows a little more than you do... or is at least willing to figure it out with you XD

I'm glad you're going forward with it, even when you have that terror feeling at the beginning.

Yeah, I mean of course the instructor is the main source of my learning, since she does all the verbal instruction and walking us through the steps, etc. But there are a lot (a loooot) of subtler things that pop up when I dance with classmates, so any time I have a good lead I'm learning from them too.

I recognize the value of Eleanor Roosevelt's "do one thing that scares you every day" advice, but I'm too squeamish to actually follow it *every* day ... but I'm using that advice to bolster me when I do my scary thing each week. XD

Out of curiosity, do you parse "do something scary" as something done socially/publicly? Or do you count things done in private that may be intimidating in its own way?

Both, definitely. Like, I count my new knitting project as a mini-scary thing, since it doesn't risk a whole lot (time, money, and ego, but not a huge amount of them) but it's still a challenge to my skills and self-confidence.

For me, dancing is scary in both ways: the risk of embarrassing myself in front of strangers is public, but things like testing/expanding my physical strength and flexibility, wanting to capture/replicate the beauty of something I've always liked to watch, doing something "live" when I'm such a perfectionist ... that's more internal, and it matters less if other people see my success or failure there.

Good, good.

(Can you tell I've been trying to do the same, just with different means?)

I can, yeah! What I said about admiring the way you've taken on knitting - that was kind of about this idea. I mean, I respect your actual knitting skill, but I also think your approach/attitude about this, and other changes in your life, is what's really cool.

Dora! Let us do scary things together!

Well, at least in spirit!

(But maybe also, sometime, something together!)

We sort of do scary things together, in that knitting falls under "mini-scary" for me. XD (And at some point I may join you for a more ambitious activity like a retreat).

But I am open to other suggestions of possible scary things, and/or will act as cheerleader for other scary things you want to do. XD

Perhaps sometime next year we'll have to arrange a dual-scary venture ^_^

Right now writing is my Big Scary.

Just nothing physically dangerous, like bungee jumping. XD
